Pioneer of Client-centered therapy analysis

Carl Ransom Rogers was born in Oak Park, Illinoison January 8, 1902. He completed his education at the University of Wisconsin and Union Theological Seminary. He carried out his studies on psychology at Columbia. He is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the research in psychotherapy. He has been honored with several awards for his outstanding work. Carl Ransom Rogers began his career with child guidance. Due to this work, he would understand the issues of his clients on a deeper level. This helped him to develop a client-centered approach to counseling. The theory Roger puts forth for the self is depicted as humanistic, existential, and phenomenological. Combs & Snygg wrote the personality theory that is known as a phenomenal field. This theory forms the basis of Roger’s theory. Carl Rogers has written sixteen books & various journals that elaborate the same.

Origin of the therapy:

Client-centered therapy is a different yet specific way to assess personality and human relationships. This therapy is applied in different domains of psychotherapy and counseling, group settings, etc. In 1972, he was awarded by APA for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Psychology. In a study conducted by Steven J. Haggbloom, Carl Rogers was known to be the sixth most renowned psychologist of the 20th century. He was also known to be the second to Sigmund Freud, the famous neurologist & psychoanalyst.

Client-centered therapy is recognized as one of the largest domains in psychotherapy schools. Rogers was able to establish a connection between the individual personal experience that formed the basis of a specific standard for living and therapeutic effect. Certain characteristics of client-centered therapy are living in the present instead of dwelling on the past & continuously over thinking about the future, having faith & belief in one’s thoughts, accepting one’s freedom & making an impact on others’ lives. He stated that all these achievements are done himself by the client with a little appreciation & support from the therapist. The client is known to make progress in his/her growth, development & maturation, given the environment is psychologically positive, as this helps to enhance the effect on the client.

Rogers said that there are prime six conditions that affect the therapeutic change. They are:

Therapist–client psychological contact: This is a connection between therapist and client that should be present. In this relation, the two must be aware of each person’s perception.

Client incongruence: It takes into account the relationship between the awareness of the client and his experience.

Therapist congruence or genuineness: It refers to the compatibility of the therapist with the client and his work. The therapist is genuinely involved so that he can understand his client from his own experiences.

Therapist positivity towards the client: The therapist welcomes the client the way he is without any prejudice. This enables the client to express himself more freely without thinking about how the experience may sound to the therapist.

The understanding nature of the therapist: The therapist expresses empathy as he understands the client’s mental state. Due to this understanding, he can guide the client in a much more efficient manner.

Client perception: This states that the client should perceive a minimum degree of, the therapist’s positivity and understanding nature.

The main conditions required for successful client-centered therapy are Congruence, Empathy & Unconditional positivity. These three criteria define the perspective of the therapist.

Congruence: It is the compatibility the patient has with the client without covering himself with a professional or personal facade.

Unconditional positivity: Acceptance of the client the way he is without any prejudiced state of mind. He should listen to the client without any judgment or disregard or insult to the feelings of the client.

Empathy: The therapist should empathize with the client & have the wish to hear out the client’s side of the story.

Client-Centered Therapy:
When Rogers started to develop this theory, he wanted it to be a part of the system that forms steps in therapy. Initially, this theory was known as non-directive therapy, but he later changes the name of client-centered & then also used the term person-centered. Rogers was of the strong opinion that the theory he had developed could be applied to several situations & not only in the context of therapy. He had this belief beforehis Client-Centered Therapy was published in 1951. Due to this, he began to use the phrase person-centered approach while explaining his theory. In person-centered therapy, the person-centered approach is used in the therapy. This theory is also useful in personality, interpersonal relations, education, nursing, & overcome cross-cultural barriers. In 1946 the book ‘Counseling with Returned Servicemen’ was published by John L. Wallen & Roger was the co-author of it. John L. Wallen is known as the pioneer of The Interpersonal Gap model. In this book, they practiced the person-centered approach when they counseled the personnel who had returned from World War II.The effect & efficiency of the client-centered approach was documented by Elias Porter at Ohio State University. He used the recordings of the therapy sessions that were held by Rogers & his patients. With the use of Rogers’s recordings, Porter customized a method to study the degree of accuracy the counselor indulged. The patient or the client often made decisions based on the attitude of the therapist.
